The Land of the Nile. Long ago, the people of Ancient Egypt lived beside a giant river called the Nile. Every year, the river flooded and left rich, dark soil for growing food. The Nile gave the Egyptians water, fish and a way to travel. That is why people call Egypt the gift of the Nile.
Pharaohs and Kings. The ruler of Egypt was called a pharaoh. Pharaohs were kings who were treated like living gods. They wore a striped headdress and a golden beard. One famous pharaoh was King Tutankhamun, who became king when he was just nine years old. His treasure was found in 1922.
Pyramids and Mummies. Ancient Egyptians believed in life after death. They built giant pyramids as homes for their kings after they died. Inside, they placed a mummy, which is a body that is preserved with special wrapping. The biggest pyramid is the Great Pyramid of Giza, built from more than two million giant stones.
Gods of Egypt. The Egyptians worshipped many gods. Ra was the sun god who sailed across the sky. Anubis had the head of a jackal and watched over mummies. Bastet was a cat goddess. People gave gifts to their gods and built temples with huge carved pillars to honor them.
